How to improve Wellington's struggling bus network

As a public service city, Wellington commuters fly the flag for the public transport bus use.

Wellingtonians use the bus to get to work at four times the national rate, with 17.3% of people swiping a Snapper card both morning and night, according to Stats NZ data from 2019.

But for many, that is in spite of, not because of, the quality of the bus network.

The bustastrophe of 2018 lingers long in the mind. But Wellington’s bus service has since plumbed even lower depths – bus reliability is currently at an all-time low, with more than 2600 cancelled bus trips in May, amounting to 3.9% of all journeys.
